What an absolute mess. On July 4th, the Newcastle United players will return for pre-season. And as things stand, Neil Redfearn will be there to greet them.

According to the Shields Gazette, Redfearn is on standby to take pre-season training if a new manager has not been appointed by then. And that’s looking extremely likely. It doesn’t seem like the board know which direction they want to take the club (other than down), so appointing a new manager can hardly be close.

There’s an almost endless list of managerial targets, ranging from the washed up to the untested. But as things stand, it’ll be Redfearn who oversees the first-team in the meantime.

The former Leeds United manager was recently appointed as the Under 23s head coach, but he could immediately be set for a promotion.

Newcastle fans were worried about Neil Redfearn eight months ago

Redfearn began working with the club back in October 2018, but sharp left, only to return this summer. But even back then, some fans were worried that this guy would replace Rafa Benitez.

We ran a Twitter reaction piece back on 3rd October 2018, with fans thinking Redfearn’s addition to the youth setup would eventually lead to him entering the first-team picture in place of Benitez.

And here we are, almost eight months on, and this is a distinct possibility. It was a joke back then, but it’s no longer funny.

We had a world class manager, and Mike Ashley forced him out. What an absolute mess this club is.
