Arriving from Italian giants AC Milan, Newcastle’s signing of Sandro Tonali was seen as a real coup for the club.

Signed for £55m, Tonali’s Magpies transfer made him the most expensive Italian player in history.

Despite starting brightly at St James’ Park, the midfielder’s time on Tyneside hasn’t been plain sailing, to say the least – with a ban from football ultimately derailing the early stages of his Newcastle United career.

Tonali, however, is expected to have a huge impact on Newcastle’s fortunes once he returns to football.

Sandro Tonali is currently 24-years-old at the time of writing. He was born on May 8th, 2000.

He is Italian having been born in the city of Lodi in northern Italy.

Following the announcement of Tonali’s ban from football, his long-term girlfriend spoke out in support of him, taking to Instagram to say: ‘Sempre e per sempre dalla tua parte,’ which, when translated from Italian to English reads: ‘Always and forever on your side.”

Sandro Tonali gambling ban

In October 2023, Sandro Tonali was handed a 10-month football ban by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for breaching gambling rules in Italy.

Tonali was then handed another two-month suspended ban by the English Football Association (FA) for breaking betting rules while featuring in the Premier League.

Newcastle United announced that Tonali could return to competitive football from Wednesday 28th August following the conclusion of his ten-month ban.

Upon arriving at the club, Sandro Tonali went viral on social media for visiting a local Wetherspoons in Newcastle. Tonali’s visit to the Gosforth pub left many supporters convinced he had been pranked by one of his fellow teammates.

Dan Burn however lifted the lid on the alleged practical joke, telling reporters: “People think we stitched him up but I genuinely think he just booked it.

“He must have typed in ‘restaurants in Gosforth’ and Wetherspoons has popped up. With him not knowing any different he’s booked it.

“The next day we were like, ‘Wetherspoons? What are you doing there?’ But he said he enjoyed it!”

Sandro Tonali earned himself cult-hero status on Tyneside early on in his Newcastle career, so much so Toon fans created a song for the Italian.
