Adam Lawrence is a ‘highly-regarded’ youth coach who has been hired as Newcastle United’s new Under-21 manager.

Newcastle United have been without an Under-21 coach since June, when Diarmuid O’Carroll departed to take up a senior role at Sparta Prague.

The Newcastle academy have taken their time in finding a replacement but appear to have struck gold with the appointment of Adam Lawrence.

Lawrence left Manchester United this summer after four and a half successful years and is looking to replicate that on Tyneside.

Here is everything you need to know about him.

Teams Adam Lawrence has coached

Lawrence has enjoyed a fantastic career in coaching and has worked his way up to play a crucial role at some of England’s biggest clubs.

His career began 20 years ago, still a teenager, when he first worked for Millwall as a casual coach. After then working for the Borough of Lambeth and spending time in the United States, Lawrence returned to Millwall in 2009.

He spent two years working with the 9-11 age bracket before moving across London to Charlton Athletic.

Lawrence spent eight years at Charlton, initially as the lead coach for Under-13-16 level before being promoted to head of coaching for Under-9s all the way through to Under-23s.

In 2021, Lawrence took a big step up when he was hired by Manchester United to be their lead Under-16 coach.

After two seasons, he was promoted to Under-18s manager, where he enjoyed great success. All the while, he served as Head of Player Development for the Under-13s to Under-16s.

Now he’s bringing his years of experience to Newcastle.

Though his side just missed out on the title in 2024-25 despite losing only one game, Lawrence did win an impressive treble during his first season at the helm.

Praise for Adam Lawrence

Lawrence earned a lot of admirers during his time in Manchester and earned a great reputation for player development.

Editor of United in Focus, Dan Coombs, told Geordie Boot Boys: “Adam Lawrence had a near-perfect record as Manchester United under-18s coach, where he was incredibly highly rated.

“He won three trophies during his first full season at the club, and was one game away from winning the league again last season.

“Even though this season’s results have shown no drop-off, there is a concern that United have allowed a very talented coach to slip the net.”

Man Utd youngster Harry Amass also told the club’s website about how much Lawrence helped him when he moved to the North.

He said: “Adam Lawrence, when I first joined, him being from down south, there was that connection straight away, he made sure I was settled and was always someone I could go to if I needed something.

“And as I got more comfortable, he helped me on the pitch. In that first season in U18s I really excelled and a big part of that was him, always making sure I was doing the right stuff.”

What Steve Harper has said about Adam Lawrence appointment

Academy Director Steve Harper told Newcastle’s official website why Lawrence was such an exciting appointment.

“We are delighted to welcome Adam to Newcastle United as new Under-21s Lead Coach,” Harper said.

“We have carried out a thorough recruitment process to ensure we find the right person to nurture and develop our young players, and in Adam, we have an outstanding young coach joining the club.

“His record speaks for itself but results only tell part of the story. Throughout his career, he has prioritised the individual development of the young players he has worked with, and he will play a key role in supporting our talent pathway into the first team.

“I’d also like to thank Robbie Stockdale and everyone connected with the Under-21s for their hard work and collaborative approach while we recruited into this position.”

Also speaking to the club, Lawrence spoke about how excited he was about his new role.

He said: “It’s a real privilege to join Newcastle United and to lead the Under-21s squad at such an exciting time for the Academy.

“I’ve always believed in creating environments where young players can grow – not just as footballers, but as people – and that is something the Academy does very well.

“The club has a clear vision for development, and I’m looking forward to working with the staff and players to help each individual take the next step in their journey.”
