Newcastle United endured something of a reality check last season.
Indeed, while there were moments of great glory at St James’ Park, Newcastle could not string enough consistency together to reach European football again.
Indeed, despite teeing themselves for another European jaunt by finishing seventh in the Premier League, Manchester United winning the FA Cup condemned Eddie Howe’s side to a season without continental competition.
On paper, at least, that should help for the campaign ahead.
Howe now only has to focus on domestic matters, making squad management somewhat easier.
Still, there can be little doubt that missing out on Europe was disappointing.
UEFA have now released their club coefficient rankings, which influences seedings in draws for club competitions.
Points are earned based on continental performances and while that obviously won’t impact Newcastle this season, perhaps it will going forward when they eventually return to the European stage.

Where Newcastle rank in UEFA’s new co-efficient ranking
As per the governing body’s official website, Newcastle rank 81st, below Brighton and Aston Villa.
That, however, is a slight improvement on the 2022-23 season, where the club ranked 83rd.
Newcastle already know where they stand with the Champions League
Getting into the Champions League during his first full season in charge was no doubt a remarkable achievement from Howe.
Still, perhaps it was too much, too soon.
The night against Paris Saint-Germain on Tyneside will not be forgotten anytime soon but those behind the scenes at the club are understood to accept that Newcastle are still miles off being a regular top-four contender.
The challenge will obviously be to make sure Newcastle are there or thereabouts on a consistent basis but that surely takes longer than just one fantastic season.
Newcastle were not embarrassed in the Champions League despite their group stage exit.
Now, it’s about getting back there as soon as possible.
