It feels like the Liverpool team of the past few years simply have the beating of Newcastle United, by hook or by crook.

There is a real desperation for Newcastle to change that, with the two sides set to meet in the Premier League on February 26th, as well as in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on March 16th.

According to the Athletic, every player and member of staff at Newcastle United feel like they owe Liverpool more than one after recent results against the Reds.

Newcastle’s record against Liverpool is awful. That has continued during Eddie Howe’s reign as manager, despite the Magpies becoming a much better team.

The Reds have been dominant against Newcastle, while there have been various moments of controversy that have gone against the Magpies.

During last season’s visit to Anfield, Newcastle were well beaten. However, there was still a moment of contention as Diogo Jota dived to win a penalty late in the game. Alan Shearer slammed Jota, as Liverpool went on to win 4-2.

In the reverse fixture, Newcastle were brutally on the end of a smash and grab. Liverpool had Virgil van Dijk sent off, yet were able to complete a remarkable comeback in the final 10 minutes courtesy of a Darwin Nunez brace. Yes, the Darwin Nunez who is normally woeful in front of goal but turns into prime Alan Shearer when he faces Newcastle United.

Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat at Anfield in August 2022 was agonising. Fabio Carvalho scored the winner after the allotted amount of stoppage time had been played. Mehrdad Ghodoussi was furious after the game, while tensions boiled over on the touchline between the two coaching departments.

There has been plenty of needle between Newcastle United and Liverpool in recent years, but it has always been the Reds who have come out on top. It is no wonder that the Magpies believe they owe Liverpool one.

Hopefully they can do that at Anfield tonight. Newcastle have Sandro Tonali fully fit for the trip to Merseyside, which is a huge boost.
