Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar recently made his 79th appearance for Switzerland in a friendly game against Denmark.

Despite head coach Murat Yakin previously claiming that the 32-year-old would be dropped from his first-team for the foreseeable future, Schar started the game in a back five alongside Manuel Akanji and Ricardo Rodriguez.

The game ended in a 0-0 as Schar helped to record a clean sheet for his side, and now Swiss paper Blick having given their honest thoughts on how the Newcastle man performed.

Swiss heap praise on Schar performance

Schar has been a very solid and reliable performer for Newcastle over the last few years and has certainly risen to the challenge with Eddie Howe stepping in as manager back in 2021.

The defender went through a very difficult period under Steve Bruce who didn’t fancy him and dropped him to the bench for the majority of his tenure, but now he’s one of the most underrated centre-backs in the Premier League.

It was a bit of a blow for him personally to learn that he would no longer be starting for his national team ahead of this summer’s European championships, but his performance against Denmark may help the coach change his mind.

The report on Schar claims that he was the best player on the pitch at the weekend, praising his long-range passion ability and that it would be unthinkable to drop him from the team when playing in this five at the back formation.

Schar now a Newcastle star

Over the almost six years that Schar has played for the club, nobody could question his effort in a black and white shirt and when he does eventually leave or retire he’ll always be remembered as a top player at St James’ Park.

The Swiss international was a bit of a late bloomer and in a way it’s a shame as in the long term they could really use someone with his on-the-ball ability and very impressive passing range.

Newcastle are in the market for a new defender at the minute with Schar turning 33 this year, but he’s certainly still got a lot to give this team yet, especially now with Sven Botman ruled out for up to nine months.

It really will be a sad day on Tyneside when the centre-back eventually does retire, but he’ll always be welcome back to the club having experienced the very lowest and highest points of Newcastle’s recent history.
