They will be the Magpies’ fourth and fifth signings of the month, but what number shirt will the latest arrivals wear at St James’ Park.

Old shirt numbers unavailable for Matt Targett and Dan Burn

When Bruno Guimaraes joined the club, it was obvious he was going to be number 39. He always wears it because of his father, and most importantly it was available.

However, it looks like both Targett and Burn will have to pick a new number for the back of their Toon shirts.

Throughout his club career, Targett has worn three, 18, 21 and 33. All of those numbers are currently occupied at Newcastle.

Burn has a similar issue. He’s Brighton’s number 33, and he also wore that jersey at Wigan and Fulham too. But Newcastle currently have a number 33 – reserve goalkeeper Dan Langley.

There aren’t many exciting numbers available at the moment at Newcastle. The lowest number is 13, but if Targett or Burn are superstitious they might avoid that.

The next few lowest numbers are 22, 25 30 and 31. Will any of those options appeal to the Magpies’ latest reinforcements?

Potential outgoings at Newcastle might free up some other numbers, but those are the options at the minute.
