What shirt number Anthony Gordon could wear for Newcastle

Anthony Gordon is set to sign for Newcastle United, but is incredibly unlikely to retain the number 10 shirt that he has been wearing for Everton.

The Magpies have finally agreed a deal to sign the 21-year-old, having failed to sign him during the summer.

He was the subject of a £35million bid, but now a fee of £45million is going to take Gordon from Goodison Park to St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe has needed a forward ever since Chris Wood left for Nottingham Forest, and he is finally getting one.

Gordon will give Howe more options in attack, and is capable of playing on either flank. He is an incredibly exciting talent, and looks like someone who could become a real star under the guidance of the Newcastle manager.

The winger is ineligible for Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup clash with Southampton, so it is likely that his Toon debut will come on February 4th when the Magpies face West Ham in the Premier League.

But what shirt number could the new signing be given?

No chance Anthony Gordon will wear the number 10 shirt at Newcastle

At the start of the current season, Gordon was given a new shirt number at Everton. He went from being 24 to 10, which was certainly a big deal.

However, there is no chance he will get the same jersey at Newcastle. The number 10 currently belongs to Allan Saint-Maximin, and will not be given up unless he leaves the club in the coming days.

There have been rumours of an exit for ASM, but the Telegraph recently reported that Newcastle have no plans to get rid of the Frenchman.

So there is no chance that Gordon will get the number 10, and he won’t get his former number either. The 24 shirt is not available at St James’ Park, as it currently belongs to top scorer Miguel Almiron.

Therefore, the Scouser is going to have to pick an unfamiliar number to wear on the back of his new black and white shirt.

The lowest option he can have is 15, after it was vacated by Kieran Trippier in the summer. 16 is also available, as is 20 following Wood’s departure.

25 is also a possibility for Gordon. That would give him the chance to don the number that was previously worn by Newcastle winger Gabriel Obertan. It wouldn’t take much for the youngster to surpass his efforts on Tyneside.
