Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has big ambitions for St James’ Park.

The future of our stadium has been a hot topic of discussion between fans lately, with debates taking place over whether or not the new owners should look to build a new ground.

A new St James’ Park would be bigger and more spectacular – coinciding with the lofty plans of the new ownership.

However, it could possibly be a soul destroying decision to take Newcastle United away from its home.

Fortunately, there are no plans to leave St James’ Park. Mehrdad Ghodoussi confirmed that in a recent interview with the Athletic. However, he did state that they will look to increase its capacity.

Staveley wants St James’ Park to be the ‘best stadium’

Following the interview, the Athletic’s George Caulkin has given a bit more insight into what the new owners want to do with St James’ Park.

Speaking on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, Caulkin provided one more snippet that Staveley told him.

“I didn’t use this quote, but Amanda Staveley also said ‘I would love to make it the best stadium in the world. I don’t have the time at the moment’,” Caulkin said.

Improving St James’ Park is the right way forward

While I’m sure a new stadium would be mightily impressive, it would be devastating to leave St James’ Park. It is a special stadium, and boasts one of the best atmospheres around.

Leaving would be a dangerous decision, so it’s excellent to hear that the new owners have no such plans.

But they do have plans to improve St James’ Park. That’s brilliant news, as it could certainly do with a facelift. Fans were buzzing just to see the windows get a wash following the completion of the takeover.

Staveley has already made one big change to the ground – removing all of the Sports Direct signs. That was a defining moment for the club’s supporters.

Increasing the capacity will be a long-term plan for SJP, but there are other improvements that can be made. St James’ Park wasn’t a happy place to come during the Mike Ashley era. But that has changed now, and fans’ positivity should be reflected in their surroundings.

Can St James’ Park become the best stadium in the world? Some would say it already is. But the heartrate of fans in level seven would perhaps suggest otherwise.
