What Jacob Murphy did when handed the Sela Cup for Newcastle

Jacob Murphy has had a truly fascinating Newcastle United career.

A £12m signing under Rafa Benitez, the winger has been farmed out on loan twice during his time at the club and largely proved a rather unfashionable addition deep into the Mike Ashley era.

Still, Murphy has since gone on to become one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Eddie Howe overhaul at Newcastle.

While not necessarily one of the truly key players, the 28-year-old still made 36 appearances across all competitions last season, proving a useful member of the squad.

The former Norwich forward also provided one of the season highlights when waving off Southampton defender Duje Caleta-Car following his red card in the Carabao Cup semi-final, underlining his cult-hero status amongst supporters.

Unsurprisingly, that continued as Newcastle lifted the Sela Cup on Sunday.

Though good to finish pre-season off on a positive, it would be foolish to read anything into Newcastle beating Fiorentina and Villareal in a pre-season tournament.

Still, it would equally be as miserable not to enjoy it for what it was, a chance for a Newcastle squad to have given supporters such joy over the last 18 months or so getting the opportunity to lift some ‘silverware’.

Murphy certainly adopted that approach.

Handed the trophy, the forward soaked it all in, treating the trinket as if it were the Champions League or Premier League trophy. Shuffling along from side to side with the cup in his hands, Murphy’s teammates loved his antics.

Murphy is living the dream

A boyhood Newcastle supporter to have transformed his career on Tyneside during a boom period for the club, Murphy is living the absolute dream.

The fact is, the forward also scored a brilliant goal and looks set to continue in Howe’s plans going forward. Not just a cheerleader off the pitch, he’s made a tangible difference on it too.

Now, imagine what he’ll be like if we win something…
