Newcastle United are being linked with a move for Everton defender Ben Godfrey.

According to the Mirror, the Magpies are ready to reignite their interest in the 24-year-old, whom Eddie Howe is supposedly a really big fan of.

Godfrey may or may not be a Premier League player come the end of the season.

Everton did beat Newcastle in their last game in the Premier League.

But the Toffees are only three points above the relegation zone at the moment.

One would imagine Everton going down would increase Newcastle’s chances of signing him.

Godfrey joined Everton in the summer of 2020 in a £25 million deal from Norwich City (BBC Sport).

He impressed in his first term at Goodison Park under Carlo Ancelotti and showed good versatility. This term, he hasn’t been quite as good, although many Everton players have struggled throughout 2021/22.

But the star is still young and talented, and earlier this term he came in for high praise from former Newcastle winger Andros Townsend.

Townsend, of course, now plays for Everton and knows Godfrey well.

He told the Daily Mail in September: “The one player who does stick out is Ben Godfrey,’ Townsend admits.

“Obviously I played against him last season and he’s got massive potential. But seeing him on a day-to-day basis, he really is the real deal.

“Again, with a manager like Rafa who will work hard to improve him, he can really go to the very top.

“I know he was involved in the England setup in the summer and didn’t quite make the squad, but he’s a player who’s definitely going to go right to the very top sooner rather than later. And by very top, I mean playing in major tournaments for England.”

The links to Godfrey are interesting.

He hasn’t really enjoyed a particularly great season this time around at Goodison Park.

But we’ve seen how good he can be.

Perhaps the most appealing thing about Godfrey would be the fact that he has an impressive turn of pace.

Currently, that is something Necastle are sorely lacking at the back.
