Jacob Murphy just can’t catch a break.

His time at Newcastle was a disaster, with inconsistent runs in the team eventually forcing him out of favour.

When January came, he was on the move, joining West Brom on loan. The Baggies needed another creative player, having seen Harvey Barnes return to Leicester.

Barnes had been fantastic at the Hawthorns, meaning Murphy has a tough job on his hands to fill the void.

Well so far, he’s struggling. And despite scoring a key goal against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, fans still aren’t convinced.

Newcastle were at the heart of the action for West Brom. Murphy drew the home side level early in the second half, then another Newcastle loanee, Dwight Gayle, won a controversial penalty late on for Darren Moore’s side to snatch a point.

While Gayle’s apparent dive wasn’t pretty, neither was Murphy’s performance. And the fans let him know.

West Brom fans weren’t happy with Murphy

Will he ever get his confidence back?

The problem for the 23-year-old seems to be confidence, or lack of. Since arriving at Newcastle in 2017, he has never looked like he believes in himself.

Positive moments in black and white were few and far between. Two that spring to mind were his goal at the Etihad and a wonderful assist against Stoke.

That’s about as good as it got. Murphy needs to re-find his confidence, and it initially looked like the Championship was the perfect place to do that.

Hopefully West Brom can go on a good run, which will help our young winger believe in himself once again. For now though, things aren’t good.
