Newcastle’s stunning victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League has rightfully earned the players plaudits, and Kieran Trippier has now been on the receiving end of praise.

It is hard to pick out a player who was not outstanding during the victory, and Trippier was one who shone on the big night at St James’ Park.

England manager Gareth Southgate has now praised Trippier, highlighting that he is finally getting the credit he deserves after initial ridicule years ago.

Southgate praises Trippier

Speaking in an England press conference, Southgate claimed that Trippier deserves plaudits for being such a reliable player for a long time.

“I know Kieran Trippier is flavour of the month now, but we used to pick him (for England) and people used to laugh,” Southgate stated.

“He’s proved himself again and again and again.”

“They (Newcastle) gave an excellent performance and it was a brilliant night for a fanbase and football club who are totally united and have obviously had a difficult 20 years waiting for a night like that.”

Trippier has been an underrated figure for a few years now, but is finally getting the credit he deserves for years of consistent performances.

The defender is often overshadowed in England discussions as the likes of Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold are more popular right-back picks, but Trippier is a player who should be an automatic pick for England squads right now.

He has been invaluable to Eddie Howe’s side since joining from Atletico Madrid, and is perhaps one of the main reasons behind Newcastle’s ascent up the table. He was the first big-name signing since the departure of Mike Ashley, and he has helped Newcastle avoid relegation and then make top four.

Many players within the Newcastle squad deserve praise for last season, but Trippier is a figure who instantly bought into Howe’s project and the culture at the club, and quickly made himself a hero.
