Newcastle United will be joined in the Premier League next season by Leeds United and Burnley.

The Magpies will also face one of Sunderland or Sheffield United in the Premier League next season, with the two clubs set to meet in the Championship playoff final at Wembley.

If Sunderland win, the Tyne-Wear derby will be a Premier League fixture for the first time since 2016.

When it comes to the teams that won automatic promotion, they each did it with a former Newcastle United player in their squad.

Karl Darlow was Leeds United’s goalkeeper for the final few games of the season, as Daniel Farke’s side won the title.

As for Burnley, their promotion winning squad included Jonjo Shelvey.

However, the ex-Toon midfielder will not be following Burnley into the Premier League.

Former Newcastle United midfielder to become a free agent

Following the end of their campaign, Burnley have announced their retained list.

The Clarets have confirmed that Shelvey will be leaving the club when his contract expires on 30th June.

The 33-year-old had joined Scott Parker’s side on a short-term deal in January, but he barely featured.

Shelvey’s Burnley career consisted of just four appearances, with his only two starts coming in the FA Cup.

He made two substitute appearances in the Championship, but was not even in the squad for Burnley’s final 12 games of the season.

Shelvey will now be looking for a new club, as he prepares to become a free agent.

Jonjo Shelvey was ‘unbelievable’ at Newcastle United

The former England midfielder has had a difficult time since leaving Newcastle United in 2023.

He endured a disastrous six months with Nottingham Forest, where he fell out with Steve Cooper.

Shelvey then played for Caykur Rizespor and Eyupsor in Turkey before this short stint in Lancashire.

Throughout his career, Shelvey has been accused of being lazy. However, that would be unfair criticism in the eyes of former Toon teammate Dwight Gayle.

During a recent interview, Gayle called Shelvey an ‘unbelievable’ player who is thoroughly professional off the pitch.

“I see Jonjo, I think he’s perceived that way that he’s a bad professional, or he doesn’t concentrate, but he would be locked in,” Gayle said.

“He’s very professional, he likes his golf and he likes a beer and stuff, but then he’d always be doing extras at home. He’s got his gym at home. He was always working to be fair, he was an unbelievable player.”
