Two Newcastle players are now doubts to face Wolves next weekend with injury issues

Newcastle United have a couple of injury doubts ahead of their next Premier League game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Magpies have started the season unbeaten, not tasting defeat in any of their opening four league and cup games. That includes the win over Tottenham, with Newcastle playing nowhere near their best to beat Spurs on Sunday.

In fact, that has been the story of Newcastle United‘s season so far. Eddie Howe’s side have not played particularly well, but are getting results.

The hope is that things will seriously improve when players are much sharper, while Eddie Howe could benefit from having a stronger bench.

Joe Willock and Callum Wilson injury update

The Newcastle boss should have some extra depth soon, with Joe Willock and Callum Wilson currently out of action due to injury. Willock is out with a thigh problem, while Wilson picked up a back injury in pre-season.

They will hopefully return in the near future, but the Wolves game might be too soon.

That is according to the Shields Gazette, who report that Willock and Wilson are both doubts for Newcastle’s Premier League game at Molineux against Wolves on September 15th.

Joe Willock’s injury is not serious

It is a shame that neither player will probably be involved against Wolves, but it should hopefully not be too long after that game that they are fit and available.

With regards to Willock, the situation is much more positive than it was when he limped off during the Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

It looked like he had suffered a serious injury, which would have been a major blow. Instead, it appears that Willock will be out for weeks rather than months.

The Shields Gazette also note that what Paul Mitchell has said about Willock, as the Toon sporting director does the media rounds following Newcastle’s terrible transfer window.

“Joe Willock – I know he got injured against Forest, but we all saw what he can bring to this team,” he said.

“He’ll be back very soon.”

Newcastle need Callum Wilson in reserve

While Willock is only going to be out short-term, it has been a while since we saw Callum Wilson in action.

The £20million striker returned at the start of pre-season, only to quickly suffer a back injury.

He was not involved in any of Newcastle’s pre-season friendlies, and it feels as if his fitness problem played a part in him remaining at St James’ Park. There had been rumours that Wilson would leave, but he is still a Newcastle United player.

And Eddie Howe desperately needs him back, as Alexander Isak could do with some cover. While the Magpies did sign Will Osula this summer, it appears as if Howe is still not ready to trust him in a competitive game. That is understandable, given how raw he is.

But that has put pressure on Isak to play every minute of every game, and he could really benefit from being able to dovetail with Wilson.

Eddie Howe stated that Wilson would miss the first few games of the season, with the 32-year-old missing four games so far. That number looks set to stretch to five when the Magpies face Wolves.
