Trent Alexander-Arnold addresses Anthony Gordon clash as Liverpool beat Newcastle

As ever, Newcastle United vs Liverpool was dramatic.

Darwin Nunez scored two goals as 10-man Liverpool came from behind to beat Newcastle at St James’ Park on a hugely disappointing afternoon for Eddie Howe’s side.

Despite Anthony Gordon’s goal and Virgil van Dijk’s red card, the Reds found a way to silence the crowd during the dying embers of the game.

Gordon and Trent Alexander-Arnold were involved in a flash point in the first-half.

The Liverpool defender was booked for throwing the ball away after a collision with the Newcastle forward but duly escaped another yellow card despite hauling Gordon down only seconds later.

Alan Shearer was left fuming about the decision not to send Alexander-Arnold off and the Liverpool star addressed the flashpoint after the game.

Speaking when asked about the incident by Sky Sports (via the BBC Sport’s LIVE blog), Alexander-Arnold said: “Sometimes away from home those things can go against you. I made a mistake and then the crowd gets on top of myself the team. Luckily we are experienced in playing in difficult environments and we pulled through.”

Alexander-Arnold recovered well

Having avoided the red card but then making the mistake that led to Gordon’s goal, Alexander-Arnold did recover well as the Reds came from behind.

Clearly, that will mean little to Newcastle fans but the fact Howe’s side let him do so was hugely disappointing.

Gordon could surely have run directly at his marker more after the yellow card and the goal, with Alexander-Arnold on the ropes. The same could be said for Harvey Barnes when he came on too.

You simply cannot allow such talented players to get back into a game at the highest level. These are the kind of teams who punish you.
