Newcastle United have been looking to the future in recent transfer windows.

While so much focus is naturally on how the club strengthen in the present ahead of a Champions League campaign next season, Newcastle also have an ambition to grow long-term.

Garang Kuol was brought in over the course of the January transfer window, while the likes of Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Harrison Ashby have most of their careers ahead of them.

Yankuba Minteh has already been signed this summer as the club look to ensure they house top talents long-term.

Now, it seems there could be another player of such profile on the way.

Newcastle launch surprise move for Josh Griffiths

Indeed, according to journalist and noted transfer insider Alan Nixon, Newcastle are plotting a move for a West Brom youngster.

It is claimed on Nixon’s Patreon account that Toon sporting director Dan Ashworth is a huge fan of the 21-year-old having worked at the Midlands club and could sanction a deal to sign the goalkeeper.

Nixon suggests a decision is still to be made in regards to Griffiths’ immediate future after that, with the idea of him staying to compete for a place or a loan move both still on the table.

Griffiths is an England U21 international who played ten Championship games last season.

Could be a lot of movement on the goalkeeper front

While Nick Pope is clearly the defined No.1 for Newcastle, the options around him don’t look guaranteed to stay.

All of Karl Darlow, Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius have been linked with a move away in some capacity at least, while Mark Gillespie has hardly played for the senior team at any point.

So, to target a promising younger player to back-up Pope if the current options leave would certainly make sense.

It’d hardly be the most headline-grabbing move Newcastle could make this summer but a smart one long-term.
