Transfer journalist not convinced Newcastle will pursue £70m ‘genius’

Newcastle United may pursue a bid for Dominik Szoboszlai but only if the move for James Maddison doesn’t pan out.

North-East-based transfer insider, Graeme Bailey was the guest on Dean Jones‘ Chasing Green Arrows podcast on Monday night talking about potential Newcastle United transfers.

As a man with this finger on the pulse, I asked Graeme if Newcastle’s pursuit of Dominik Szoboszlai was pure fantasy.

Is Dominik Szoboszlai to Newcastle a fantasy?

Dean Jones jumped in first saying: “I’ve been waiting a few years for Szoboszlai to land in the Premier League. He’s taken a different path to the one I thought. Newcastle does seem like the perfect kind of club for him to step into doesn’t it?”

With Bailey adding responding: “It does. And they have looked at him.  They need a number 10, they’re looking at a number 10,  but Szoboszlai is an consideration for them. The problem with him is, though, he’s release clause that’s £70million.

“The problem with RB Leipzig is they only need to sell one a window to keep their model going and it’s likely to be [Josko] Gvardiol this summer with Manchester City hunting him, so if he does go there’s no need to sell.

“It’s one to keep an eye on if they don’t get James Maddison they may pursue it, but if they don’t get Maddison for whatever reason, they probably won’t because he’s not cheap.”

The interest is real but a move may be beyond Newcastle

So it seems that there’s a genuine interest there for ‘genius‘ Szoboszlai from Newcastle, but a move this summer may not be as likely as has been previously reported.

Maddison remains the priority, and if for some reason that deal doesn’t transpire, Newcastle may look at Szoboszlai but it seems clear that they will try and negotiate on the price.

Given the amount of players Newcastle want to bring in this summer, they will be looking for value for money across all dealings which is why you’ll probably not see Newcastle activating release clauses without trying to negotiate first.
