Tony Cascarino explains what surprised him about Newcastle in draw

Tony Cascasrino has told The Times that Newcastle’s lack of fight in the 0-0 draw against West Brom suggests they’re going down.

The Magpies were disappointing in the goalless draw – a result which will see further speculation over Steve Bruce’s future.

Newcastle’s position is now perilous. Fulham’s shock win over Liverpool at Anfield means they’re now just a point clear of the drop zone.

Cascarino doesn’t believe Bruce’s team are showing any of the qualities which served him well as a player.

He told The Times: “During their playing days, Steve Bruce and Sam Allardyce were uncompromising, tough defenders.

In Newcastle and West Brom I have rarely seen two teams who fail to resemble even slightly the ethos of their managers.

“In a match that both teams desperately needed to win, they put up next to no fight.

“I am not saying that the players should set out to kick each other but one would expect a little more drive and desire.

“On yesterday’s showing, Fulham look far more likely to escape relegation than Newcastle or West Brom.”

Newcastle have won just twice in their last 16 matches and are staring at Championship football next season.

That would be catastrophic for the football club and something has to change pretty quickly.

Points needed quickly

Newcastle – and Bruce – are facing a massive couple of weeks.

On Friday they face Aston Villa at home before taking on Brighton prior to the international break.

Newcastle’s run-in isn’t favourable and points are needed sharpish.

Bruce still has to face Liverpool, West Ham, Arsenal, Leicester and Manchester City before the end of the campaign.

Newcastle fans won’t need reminding that their final game is away at Fulham.

Bruce will hope the Magpies have secured their Premier League status before that to avoid a straight shootout for relegation.
