Three Newcastle United academy players stood out in last night’s FA Youth Cup fixture against Bournemouth despite losing 5-0.

It wasn’t a great performance from the youth side as Eddie Howe watched over a humbling loss, but there were moments of individual quality which could have caught the manager’s eye.

According to Lee Ryder at The Chronicle, all three of Johnny Emerson, Trevan Sanusi and Travis Hernes impressed those who attended St James’ Park despite the result.

Newcastle trio ones to watch

Newcastle were comfortably beaten by the far superior side on Wednesday night which has been a regular occurrence for some time now, but there is a real effort being made to improve things from the ground up.

The new owners have placed a huge emphasis on developing young talent into the first team, a great way to raise funds and navigate their way around the Premier League’s financial constrictions.

On the night, there was not a lot to get excited about but there were moments which suggested things are moving in the right direction and the fans should be keeping an eye on three players in particular.

Given Newcastle’s restrictions on what they can spend which has now been so widely reported, Howe may even be forced into taking a look at some of these players to potentially bring them up to the first team.

Newcastle’s future looks brighter than ever

For once in the last couple of decades Newcastle may actually have some names in their academy system that are worth remembering in case they’re one day shining in the Premier League.

Sanusi has been tipped to be a potential star after signing from Birmingham’s academy in the summer, beating the likes of Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal who were all keen on bringing the winger into their own system.

Another winger, Emerson, has also been impressing at Newcastle, though he joined much earlier in 2019 from Queen of the South and has been developing in their youth side for nearly five years.

Hernes is another who was brought in last summer under Dan Ashworth’s new long-term plan and the 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder looks technically astute with a lot more to give.

All three played their part in Newcastle’s UEFA Youth League campaign this season in which the Magpies gave a good account of themselves beating both AC Milan and PSG.
