Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to reveal they want Rafa Benitez back at St James’ Park, after The Independent revealed that he is considering an exit from China and wants a return to the top level of football once again.

The ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid boss left Tyneside last summer after spending three years at the club, in which he helped get Newcastle out of the Championship at the first time of asking after Steve McClaren heavily contributed to our relegation.

The Spaniard threatened to walk out just days before the transfer deadline in January 2019 as reported by The Independent.

However, Ashley then sanctioned the club-record arrival of Miguel Almiron for £20 million and Benitez saw out the campaign.

The Independent state that the former Magpies boss dreams of securing trophies once again, and also mention that his extortionate salary does not compensate for his frustration at Dalian Pro – in the report, he is said to take home over £1 million a month.

It feels unfathomable that Ashley would even think about matching that salary, so if there was a potential return to Newcastle, Benitez would surely have to take a massive pay cut.

If Ashley remains at the helm, the pair’s relationships would also presumably pour cold water on any potential return. After the former Chelsea boss left for China, the Magpies owner accused him of taking the soft option and also suggested he was only interested in the money.

Ashley told The Daily Mail: ‘If you come out and say the things he did you would think it was football club first, Rafa second, money third. I’d say it was money first, Rafa, then the club last. He took the totally soft option, took the money and went to China. That disappoints me. If he’d gone back to Real Madrid, or a top six club in the Premier League, I get it. But it was about money and all he had to do was say that from the beginning.’

Despite the drama between the two men, some Newcastle fans on Twitter want to see the Spaniard back in the dugout at St James’ Park.
