Ally McCoist has been blown away with one Newcastle United player so far this season.
Newcastle suffered a difficult first half of the season with injuries building up and an early exit from the Champions League, but there have still been some unbelievable individual performances.
McCoist, who was on commentary for TNT Sports during Newcastle’s win against Aston Villa, singled out Anthony Gordon as one player who has really impressed so far.
McCoist says star Newcastle man could be headed to the Euros
Gordon has arguably been Newcastle’s greatest and most effective player this season after what was a very difficult start to like under Eddie Howe when he first signed from Everton for £45m.
The 22-year-old has so far registered 14 goal contributions in 21 Premier League appearances, including the two penalties he won against Brentford and Burnley, and has crucially been ever-present for Newcastle.
It’s safe to say Newcastle would be in an even trickier position if it wasn’t for the attacker and they’re going to need to keep him fit for the second half of the season.
McCoist is a big fan of the young man and believes that he’s actually been the best English player in that position, suggesting he should be in Gareth Southgate’s plans for the summer.
On commentary, McCoist said: “I’ve been saying it for a long time now, wide players, wide positions for Gareth Southgate, there’s nobody had a better season than him.”

Gordon could have incredible season for Newcastle
Gordon is currently on track to have a seriously impressive season for Newcastle in terms of the stats, and if he continues on this path it would be very controversial for him to again be omitted from the Three Lions squad.
It’s difficult to remember the last player Newcastle had who is so effective at both ends of the pitch and is putting up numbers like Gordon is at the minute helping to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
With the injury to Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson still yet to return, the 22-year-old will likely now be played in a more central role like he did against Arsenal back in November.
Gordon has proved to be most effective off of the left, but this is a chance to show Howe and Southgate how versatile he can be as he makes a strong bid to get to the Euros
