You need forwards who are fearless at the top level, and Theo Walcott believes Newcastle United have got exactly that.

While the defence has left a lot to be desired this season, Newcastle United have had no issue scoring goals.

Eddie Howe‘s side have become the entertainers, with the Magpies involved in plenty of high scoring games this season. They even have one of the Premier League’s top scorers in Alexander Isak, who has scored 20 league goals during the 2023/24 campaign.

He is one of two Toon players who have hit double figures in the league. The other is Anthony Gordon, who has hit new heights since leaving Everton for Newcastle.

The 23-year-old is a completely different player to the one that was at Goodison Park – he is now reliable source of goals and assists, as well as an international player.

Theo Walcott is a big fan of Anthony Gordon

Gordon made his England debut earlier this year, and certainly impressed manager Gareth Southgate with his performance.

The Newcastle winger is now in contention to go to Euro 2024, and his former teammate Theo Walcott has explained why he should be in the mix for selection.

Having played alongside Gordon at Everton, Walcott has told BBC 5 Live Sport’s Monday Night Club why he is a player that he is so ‘fond of’.

“You have got a case for Anthony Gordon,” he said.

“I think he played exceptionally well and looked quite established and experienced, even though it was his first couple games.

“I have worked with him quite closely and he’s a player I’m very fond of and is one who is only going to improve, improve, improve. I just think why not?

“He’s fearless. He was a player, I like wingers who just get at their man every time. His first thought was I’m going to be positive. I like positive players.”

Anthony Gordon should go to Euro 2024 this summer

As Walcott says, Gordon impressed when he got the chance to play for England earlier this year, having started against Brazil and came off the bench versus Belgium.

Those appearances will have increased Gordon’s chances of going to the Euros, and he absolutely has to be included in Southgate’s squad. He has enjoyed a sensational season, and has performed much better than other players in his position such as Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.

Gordon is versatile too, which could make him very valuable to Southgate. He can play on either flank or as a striker, as we have seen at Newcastle this season.

The youngster had a lot of potential at Everton, as Walcott saw firsthand, and now he is realising it. He is impactful in the final third, and can be decisive in key moments – which is massively important at international level.

Given how well he has played this season and his impact during his England debut, it would be a massive surprise if Southgate did not include Gordon in the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024.
