There’s a whole list of moments that you could choose from as your highlight of 2023 for Newcastle United and there’s almost no chance that supporters will agree on just three.
After all, fans will have so many different personal reasons for choosing their own, but this list is to try and decide what has been the biggest or perhaps most important moments for the club in the last year.
In the last 12 months, Newcastle confirmed their return to the Champions League, made a trip to Wembley for the first time in over two decades and faced off against three of Europe’s greatest teams, so this decision has certainly not been easy.
Newcastle returned to the Champions League
Although it was the 4-1 win against Brighton which all but confirmed Newcastle’s spot in the top four, it was ultimately a 0-0 result against Leicester which mathematically secured fourth place in the Premier League.
It seems strange to consider what was a fairly dull scoreless draw as one of Newcastle’s best moments considering the amount of games in which the team scored four or more, but this moment was so significant.
It could have all fallen apart had Nick Pope not stepped up in the final seconds to make a huge save, but Newcastle were well on their way to a trip to some of Europe’s best clubs.
Newcastle booked their spot at Wembley
While the result itself wasn’t ideal, the whole trip to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final will last forever in the minds of so many fans who made the journey down to the capital.
Beating Manchester United would have made it an unbelievable experience, but Newcastle fans know by now that they’re just not that lucky.
Coming out of the stadium, however, there wasn’t a huge sense of deflation or misery that the team had missed their only chance of silverware, but rather that this was just the beginning of something very exciting.
Newcastle 6-1 Tottenham
It’s not a significant result in terms of what it did to the league, but scoring five goals in 21 minutes was absolutely surreal and something that no fan is going to be able to forget any time soon.
Being in St James’ Park when that fifth goal went in felt like an outer body experience. Nothing felt real and yet there was Alexander Isak wheeling away to celebrate once again.
Yes, Tottenham were terrible on the day, but this was the most clinical Newcastle had been for a long, long time, it just felt like every shot was destined for the back of the net.
