The real reason why Matt Ritchie has sausage rolls on his shinpads after Newcastle TikTok

Newcastle United fans are asking a very important question about Matt Ritchie following a TikTok from the club’s official account.

The Magpies posted a video from the Newcastle dressing room on their official TikTok account on Wednesday, showing Ritchie‘s kit laid out.

In between his black and white shirt with the number 11 on and his socks and shorts were the midfielder’s shinpads, and they are far from ordinary.

The video shows that Ritchie’s shinpads have a picture of sausage rolls on them, which begs more questions than answers. The clip is captioned ‘a man of culture’, which certainly can’t be disputed.

Luckily, the 34-year-old, who has not been named in Newcastle’s Champions League squad, has previously explained why he wears shinpads with the Greggs delicacy on.

Sausage rolls = goals

Ritchie’s pads previously went viral back in 2018 when he scored the winner during Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at St James’ Park.

After the game, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie tweeted that the reason for the picture on Ritchie’s shinpads is because sausage rolls rhymes with goals.

Interestingly, Downie added that Ritchie was going to get rid of the shinpads and get new ones because he kept missing chances, only to then score the winner against Man United.

What Matt Ritchie has said about his shinpads

Ritchie then spoke about the shinpads himself in an interview with NUFC TV in 2021.

“Gary Roberts, who I used to play with years ago, used to say ‘get yourself a sausage roll son’,” he said.

“Sausage roll is obviously a goal, and I always used to say ‘sausages’ when we scored so I got a sausage roll on my shinpad.”

During the interview, Ritchie noted that he had changed pads and replaced them with a picture of his children. However, Newcastle’s latest TikTok, which has almost 100,000 views, suggests that the sausage rolls are back.

Sadly for Ritchie, the last time he got himself a sausage roll (goal) was July 2020 during a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park.
