‘The only other club’… Ange Postecoglou makes claim about Newcastle after facing them yesterday

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has made a big claim about Newcastle United after beating them 4-1 on Sunday evening.

Newcastle were blown away at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by a team with much more desire, energy and attacking flair and it’s really put a dent in their Champions League hopes.

But speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Postecoglou appreciated that Newcastle were going through a tough time with injuries.

Both Tottenham and Newcastle were missing key players on Sunday

Though Eddie Howe may not want to use it as an excuse, Newcastle were still very depleted despite the return of Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff who featured from the bench.

The Magpies were still missing Harvey Barnes, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy, Sven Botman and Sandro Tonali and it’s really starting to take its toll on this team who have had the same starting outfield players for the last five games.

Tottenham find themselves in a similar situation to Newcastle with Postecoglou unable to select huge players like James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Rodrigo Bentancur.

At this level in the Premier League, all it takes is just one big injury to not only lose a quality player but to knock the confidence of the rest of the team, and we can see that happening now with Newcastle.

In his interview, Postecoglou said: “You can see with Newcastle they’re probably the only other club who have the same injury attrition we have and it’s very hard in this league, it’s unrelenting.

“You miss one or two key players you’re going to slip, but when you’re missing virtually half your squad, yeah we’ve gone through a tough time.”

Pope’s injury has been a huge loss to Newcastle

Newcastle have had to deal with a lot of injuries this year, but the loss of Pope against Manchester United looks to maybe have been just one too many.

The £10m shot-stopper has been immense for the Geordies since signing last summer and it is now a huge blow to have lost him for the games against Tottenham, Everton and beyond.

There’s no exact date for when the England international will return to the first team, but it’s looking like he will be sidelined for most of the rest of the season, leaving Newcastle pondering what to do about their current goalkeeping situation.
