One of the worst kept secrets in football this season has been Newcastle United’s participation in a behind-the-scenes documentary by Amazon.

This morning the club’s website officially announced their involvement with the documentary following Amanda Staveley revealing that cameras had been following the club for a while when she spoke at the Business of Football summit earlier this month.

Since Amanda Staveley revealed there was a documentary incoming, it has since been confirmed that it will not be another “All Or Nothing” style of documentary that follows a club for the entire season with access to the dressing room and manager’s office. We’ve seen such documentaries on Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal in recent years, as well as many other clubs across many sports worldwide.

It’s not another Prime “All Or Nothing” documentary

The four-part Amazon Prime documentary series on Newcastle will focus more on the business side of things at the club following the Saudi-led takeover. It’s a bold PR move by the club given the intense scrutiny they’ve faced by the media and human rights organisations due to the involvement of the Saudi Arabian PIF.

A lot of fans are concerned that this documentary series could paint another bullseye on the club’s back, but you’d have to imagine that Amanda Staveley has been very clear with the documentary crew about what they can and can’t do in terms of how they portray the club to prevent such things from happening.

The statement put out by the club reads: “As well as offering exclusive access to the club’s decision makers, the documentary will follow the Magpies’ ongoing 2022/23 season from close quarters, with the club reaching its first cup final in 24 years.

“The series will also delve into Newcastle United’s storied history at the heart of one of the world’s great football cities and will explore the club’s unique bond with its passionate supporters as they follow their team.”

Darren Eales says the documentary will ‘take fans on the journey with us’

Additionally, Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales said: “We are excited to be offering global football fans a front row seat at this exciting time in Newcastle United’s history.

“The documentary will give football and non-football fans across the globe a unique and authentic insight into how a major Premier League club operates and will take fans on the journey with us as we strive to achieve our goals on and off the pitch.”

It seems we still have a while to wait before we get to indulge in the series with the release window set for late summer 2023 which suggests it may start in line with the commencement of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Initially, the series will be available on Prime Video in UK, Ireland and Nordic regions with further worldwide releases to be confirmed in the future.
