Newcastle United have been freshly linked with a move for Bournemouth forward Justin Kluivert during this summer’s transfer window, so it’s worth revisiting what his father Patrick Kluivert said about Alan Shearer.
Indeed, Newcastle were linked with Kluivert junior earlier this year, after the Dutchman made quite the impact impact at St James’ Park.
The forward scored a hat-trick against Newcastle United during Bournemouth’s emphatic 4-1 win over the Magpies in January.
That meant he overtook his father’s record on Tyneside. Patrick Kluivert played for Newcastle for one season between 2004 and 2005, but scored only once at St James’.
Moving for the Cherries star would be interesting, not least because of the connection with his father. The older Kluivert certainly had some strong opinions when he left Newcastle.

According to Caught Offside, Newcastle are among a number of clubs keen on a move for the 26-year-old.
It’s said that Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool are also interested in the player.
Bournemouth rate the forward highly but do recognise the fact they could make a significant profit on him this summer if they were to sell.
The south coast club value him at up to £46.8million and, interestingly, Kluivert is in a rather exclusive club.
In fact, he’s one of only three players to score in all of Europe’s top five leagues, having previously played for Roma, RB Leipzig, Nice and Valencia.

What Patrick Kluivert said about Alan Shearer
Kluivert senior arrived at Newcastle from Barcelona on a free transfer in 2004. He had been one of Europe’s most revered marksmen during his earlier career, though was clearly on the wane by the time he arrived on Tyneside.
He did, however, score 13 goals in 37 games for the club, including crucial strikes against Tottenham and Chelsea during an FA Cup campaign that reached the semi-finals.
However, in 2005, Kluivert admitted he did not enjoy the fact he couldn’t establish himself as the leading figure in the Newcastle attack due to Shearer’s presence at the club.
“There is only one man responsible for the fact that I did not become a big hit in Newcastle, his name is Alan Shearer,” he told Voetbal International.
“The man is God in the North. I think Shearer is a fantastic footballer, but Souness should have played Bellamy and me together all the time.
“We formed the ideal partnership, Souness should have preferred both of us above Shearer. I know Bellamy felt the same but that did not make a difference. Every week it was Shearer and Kluivert or Shearer and Bellamy.
“Newcastle United Football Club is all about Alan Shearer, it is as simple as that. Nobody can beat him, nobody can touch him and nobody can do anything about it.”
