The advice Kevin Keegan gave Eddie Howe about managing Newcastle

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are a match made in heaven.

Ever since Howe replaced Steve Bruce as Toon manager, Newcastle have been on the up.

While it took a bit of time to start getting results, the Magpies have not looked back since. Howe eased the club away from relegation danger last season, which would have been hugely embarrassing following the Saudi-backed takeover.

With relegation out of the question, Howe’s next ambition was to charge up the Premier League table. That is exactly what has happened this season, with Newcastle currently third with just one game to play. No matter what happens, the club will finish in the top four and play in the Champions League next season.

Add that to our run to the Carabao Cup final and it has been a spectacular year for Newcastle United. Howe has orchestrated it all, and deserves so much praise for what he has achieved.

He is creating a real legacy for himself at St James’ Park, and will soon be held in the same regard as club legends like Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan if he continues on the same path.

And he has actually asked King Kev for some help.

Kevin Keegan’s advice for Eddie Howe

According to the Daily Mail, Howe and Keegan have spoke over the phone. The report states that Howe asked the Toon legend if he had any advice for him, to which Keegan told him to be honest with the fans.

Howe has certainly done that, and it has led to supporters hanging on his every word. He has wanted the Toon Army to be ambitious and dream big, whilst talking up the club and its stature – something his predecessor did not do.

If you are going to learn, learn from the best, and Keegan is certainly up there when it comes to Newcastle United managers of the past.

It would be great if Keegan could offer Howe even more pearls of wisdom in the future. Although at the moment it does not look like he needs any more help.

But Howe has got the balance completely right. He has built a team that has his identity all over it, while he has taken advice from those that came before him.
