Throughout the January transfer window, Newcastle United was perusing LOSC Lille’s Sven Botman. However, the Toon were not able to land the Dutch defender. Reports from The Telegraph state that Tottenham is also interested.
Ex-Chelsea and Lille midfielder Joe Cole spoke to L’Equipe on Botman and why Premier League clubs are interested.
“If a defender does well in France, there is no reason why they shouldn’t do so in England,”
“That’s why so many Premier League clubs are interested in Sven Botman. There are few doubts on his ability to adapt.
“In my opinion Ligue 1 is close to the Premier League in its physical dimension.”

Newcastle should look to revist the deal in the summer
Botman looks like the real deal. He’s only 22-years-old, but the Dutchman already has a Ligue 1 winners medal and doesn’t look for off for a call up to the Netherlands national side.
Whilst Dan Burn has certainly improved the Newcastle backline. This summer a shakeup in centre-backs is needed for the Magpies.
If they can avoid the drop, a guarantee of Premier League football is a very attractive offer. Additionally, the wealth that Newcastle boast could make them a force this summer.

After a couple of years playing his football in France, Botman’s agent said he wants to take another big step. Furthermore, his agent was complimentary of the Toon describing them as a ‘very nice club’ per Calciomercato.
However, AC Milan is another club interested in the Dutch defender. Gazzetta dello Sport report that Botman is open to a move to the Italian side in the summer.
The best course of action for Newcastle is to focus on the season at hand. They’ve been in great form since the new year, unbeaten in six.

The trip to Brentford could see them extend that run, as they look to move further away from the drop zone. With the Bees in poor form, the Toon will look to capitalise on that.
Also, a win would push Brentford closer into the relegation zone, with many teams in and around the bottom three. Newcastle needs to keep their eyes on the likes of Burnley who are taking racking points recently.
