Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey spoke on his future with Newcastle United. He wants to stay for ‘as long as possible’ per an interview with Football Daily’s Twitter account.
The 30-year-old is honoured to still be at the club and is committed to play for the Magpies as long as he can.
“The club are putting in the foundations to go right to the very top. It’s just an honour to still be at the club and be part of that journey.” He stated.
“I’ve learned a lot from the manager. He’s been brilliant for me personally and I think brilliant for this football club. I want to stay for as long as possible and that’s my aim.”
Craig Hope of the Daily Mail reported that Shelvey would get a year extension on his Newcastle deal. That’s if he plays three more games, which is almost a given. So he’ll be delighted if he can get that new contract.
Shelvey has looked like a player transformed since Eddie Howe took charge of Newcastle, he’s truly earnt that new deal
It’s clear Shelvey’s future with Newcastle will last at least another year. Since Eddie Howe took charge the midfielder has turned himself around.
Under the previous manager Steve Bruce, he offered very little in midfield. He would constantly get picked and it left some Toon fans scratching their heads.
However, since the ex-Bournemouth boss was given the reigns, he highlighted Shelvey as an important player. The 30-year-old is one of many players improved by Howe.
The likes of Joe Willock, Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth and Ryan Fraser have all improved greatly. Creating selection dilemmas for the manager.

Shelvey was able to establish himself as part of the midfielder three before his injury. The Englishmen featured alongside Joelinton and January signing Bruno Guimaraes. Each player played a key role in being effective for Howe’s side in the middle of the park.
The number of players improved by Howe show what an amazing job he’s done. Shelvey is a great example of that. His creativity and long passing ability has been utilised very well by the Magpies manager.
In many ways, it shows how ineffective Steve Bruce was when he managed the club. Shelvey and a number of other players look levels better than when he was in charge.
