Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has said Newcastle United have surprised him more this season than Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Speaking with Sky Sports Italy, the 31-year-old was questioned over whether the Gunners had shocked him with their electric start to the campaign.

Having claimed it was actually unsurprising, the Italian was then asked about the Magpies.

“That was a surprise honestly, much more than Arsenal,” Jorginho said.

“But even in this case, the coach is very well prepared, and the players understood what they have to do.

“So, the right atmosphere has been created in a place where the fans are very warm, even if it’s very cold there.”

Jorginho surprised by Newcastle

Even though Toon fans were expecting great things from the side this season, nobody would have predicted the club would sit third in the Premier League table at Christmas.

Having conceded just 11 goals this term, Newcastle have the best defensive record in the top-flight, alongside league leaders Arsenal.

Eddie Howe has certainly turned things around at St James’ Park. The camaraderie amongst the squad is clear to see on the pitch, and that radiates amongst the supporters in the ground.

Although the Magpies have welcomed a number of big-money signings to Tyneside, it would be unfair to claim they have been the main component contributing to the Toon’s success.

Instead, the plaudits should go to Howe, having organised the squad in an extremely impressive way.
