Ally McCoist has made a daring comparison on talkSPORT this morning as he likened Newcastle United’s fanbase to that of another Premier League club and it may not go down well with the Geordie faithful.

In fact, it might not go down well with the Everton fans either as Ally McCoist compared Newcastle and Everton fans citing some huge similarities.

There exists, for some unknown reason, a weird bitter rivalry between Everton and Newcastle fans online with Geordies dubbing the Toffees “scouse mackems”.

The two sets of fans seem to revel in any bad news that befalls the opposite side, but where this rivalry comes from is anyone’s guess. It’s definitely not helped by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford who is as mackem as they come.

However, Everton are going through a Mike Ashley-esque level of implosion and are seeing failed takover after failed takeover. They are now set to be taken over by Miami-based investment group 777 Partners who own several clubs worldwide. Unfortunately, most of those clubs are protesting for 777 Partners to sell up, so it’s not exactly exciting times for Everton.

It’s with this in mind, maybe, that Ally McCoist compared the two fanbases on talkSPORT this morning saying: “I’m in the same boat with as I was with Newcastle fans for many years now with Everton fans. You’ve got to have a great degree of sympathy with them.

Both fanbases are extremely passionate says McCoist

“When you look at Everton fans and Newcastle fans, they’re similar in the respect of the way they support their club, fantastic. Newcastle for years and years and years were wanting new ownership and a new direction and I think that Everton are in the exact same position as Newcastle have been.”

To be fair, both fanbases are extremely passionate and now Everton are enduring what Newcastle recently went through so the comparison works, but I dare say that’s as far as either fanbase would be willing to accept.

For me, I don’t get the “rivalry” but that’s maybe due to doing a Podcast with an Evertonian softening my cold, dead heart. I would still like to see them relegated though, but more because I just want their 68-year top-flight status to come to an end – I just enjoy seeing long-running streaks come to an end … honest.
