Steve Bruce returns to Aston Villa on Monday, where the Newcastle boss was in charge for 102 games in a two-year stay, before a downturn in form led to his sacking.

One fan was so disgruntled, he threw a cabbage at Bruce, which has never been forgotten, and is constantly brought up by Villa supporters, as well as fans of other clubs.

So it was expected Bruce would be set for a hostile reception from the home fans at Villa Park on Monday.

In fact, his appointment at Villa mirrored some factors of his appointment at Newcastle: he was seen as something of an underwhelming choice by both sets of fans; while he had previously had a spell in charge of the derby rivals of each club.

Bruce made a great start at Villa

The start he made at Villa was a lot better than the one he has made on Tyneside, with him gaining 24 points from his opening 12 games in the Midlands, with him not tasting defeat until his eighth game in charge.

He also took them within a whisker of the Premier League in 2018, with him narrowly losing the Wembley play-off final 1-0 to Fulham.

Of course, that was all in the Championship, but they were still impressive feats, and those first couple of seasons are remembered fondly by Villa fans, if the Twitter comments are representative of the whole fan-base.

So it may be that Bruce receives polite applause – if not raucous cheers – from the home fans, at least, until the whistle blows to start the game, of course.

Here are a few of the comments from Twitter, in reply to questions about how they will react to Bruce’s return:
