Newcastle United have been linked with a January move for Stoke City’s Tyrese Campbell.
The Sun claim that Eddie Howe wants to bring the young forward to St James’ Park, with the new owners ready to offer £20million.
That would make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever. Only Joelinton, Joe Willock and Miguel Almiron have cost more.
Big signings are likely to become the norm, but Campbell is an interesting target. The 21-year-old is the son of former Premier League forward Kevin Campbell, who played for Arsenal and Everton.
Campbell started with Manchester City, but turned down a professional contract in 2016. He would instead join Stoke, where he made his Premier League debut in 2018. The striker made four substitute appearances as Stoke suffered relegation to the Championship.
He’s never scored in the top flight, and his goal return is hardly convincing. But he’s a young forward with stacks of potential.
Campbell has recently recovered from a knee injury, and scored in Stoke’s 2-0 win over QPR on Sunday. It was his second goal of the season from eight league appearances.
Some Toon fans might be dubious about signing a young forward who’s never hit double figures in the Championship. But based on the reaction from Stoke City fans, he could be an astute bit of business.
Stoke supporters don’t want Campbell to leave. And if he does, they believe he should cost more than the £20million that is being reported.
