Newcastle United centre-back Dan Burn has really impressed a former Toon centre-half. Steve Howey has been an admirer of Burn even before he signed for the Magpies.
Since his arrival in late January, he’s been a contributing factor to the improved backline. Newcastle has only conceded three goals in the league since the start of 2022.
The World Cup takes place later this year in Qatar. Discussions have taken place as to who will make the squad. The ex-Magpies defender offered some advice to Burn.

Howey believes Burn needs to ‘keep on doing what he’s doing’, to impress the media and Gareth Southgate
Speaking to BBC Newcastle Total Sport, Howey spoke on Burn’s chances of getting a call-up and what he needs to do to earn one.
Howey said: “I was very happy when we were linked with him and more than happy when we got him. I think he is a good player, and if he keeps his form up and Newcastle keep on doing what they are doing, I don’t think Gareth can really not take him.
“Do I think it’s too quick for him to get into the squad for the World Cup? Possibly. But you just never know.

“I think he’s doing fantastically well, I’m delighted for him. He just has to keep on doing what he’s doing, and impress the media even though we’re up in Newcastle.”
There’s certainly an opportunity between now and the winter. Options for centre-backs to play for England seem like it’s anyone’s game.
Harry Maguire has struggled this season, John Stones is not getting much game time and Tyrone Mings has looked very error-prone recently.
Burn has already established himself as starter for Newcastle, a move in the right direction
Since his arrival, Burn has established himself in the starting XI. His debut was a ‘Man of the Match’ display against Aston Villa.
He’s been paired alongside Fabian Schar, a man who’s been given a chance again under Howe and taken it. They’ve been a strong partnership at the back, making it difficult for captain Jamaal Lascelles to get a place in the team.
If Burn wants the attention of Southgate then consistent performance in Newcastle’s starting XI is a step in the right direction.

Before his arrival, they only kept two clean sheets, one against Burnley and another against Leeds United. But since his debut, Burn has played his part in getting two more clean sheets.
It’s been a terrific start to Dan Burn’s Newcastle career. If he can keep his consistency going, perhaps an England call-up is not as far away as we think.
