Newcastle were reportedly linked with a very ambitious move for unhappy Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka last week, and a new report claims Steve Bruce believes he can seal a deal.

The Telegraph’s north east football reporter, Luke Edwards, has revealed that Newcastle want to sign the Swiss star on loan during the winter transfer window, should he wish to stay in the Premier League.

It adds that Milan are thought to be leading the race for his signature, with reports earlier in the week claiming he was already house-hunting in Italy, but Bruce is said to be monitoring the situation.

It intriguingly claims: “Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is monitoring the situation and has been led to believe there is a chance Xhaka could move to the North East.”

What is becoming increasingly apparent, is that his Arsenal career looks to be over, with him not having played since he reacted to Gunners fans who booed him as he left the pitch after being substituted.

Schar will be telling Xhaka about life at Newcastle

If Bruce is looking to sign another midfielder, it is reasonable to assume he would look to do so through a temporary deal, as he still has two domestic loans available to use.

But if a loan move for Xhaka would see Newcastle having to pay all his wages, it could be a stumbling block to any potential deal, as he is certain to be on a bigger salary than any current Newcastle player.

Whichever way you look at it, it would be an audacious move by the Magpies, but if they can pull it off, it could be a fantastic signing for the latter half of the season.
