Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce says Joelinton has suffered a thigh injury.

The striker started in the 1-0 defeat to York City today, but lasted only 18 minutes before he had to come off, with Dwight Gayle his replacement.

The Brazilian – who was yesterday announced as the club’s new number 7, with Callum Wilson taking the number 9 shirt – was seen sitting in the stands clutching an ice pack against his leg.

Speaking after the defeat, Bruce said (via BBC Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck): “We’re a little bit concerned about Joelinton and will have to see how he is in the next 24 hours.

“He’s got a thigh injury. We hope that he’s not too bad.”

Hopefully Joelinton will not be out of action for too long.

A solid pre-season is very important for him ahead of the coming season.

He still has a lot to prove, and needs to be well prepared going into the 2021/22 campaign.

Not ideal

It will be a real frustration for Joelinton to come off so soon in the first pre-season match.

He’s just got a new number, which may help relieve some of the pressure he’s been under.

Hopefully the prognosis is encouraging when it comes, and Joelinton is able to make a swift recovery.
