It seemed like a door had opened for Rolando Aarons, but Steve Bruce has been quick to shut it in his face.
With Jetro Willems and Paul Dummett ruled out for the rest of the season, Newcastle desperately need another left-back. Matt Ritchie is currently Bruce’s only option.
However, ourselves and lots of other fans pondered whether Rolando Aarons could get a chance. The 24-year-old is back at Newcastle after a loan spell in League One with Wycombe Wanderers, and actually played at wing-back in pre-season for the Magpies.
Aarons seemed like a decent option for Bruce, rather than dipping into the transfer window and spending money that could be put to better use.
But Bruce has put the speculation to bed. When asked if Aarons could be included in his 25-man Premier League squad, Bruce simply told the Shields Gazette: “No.”
That pretty much confirms that Newcastle are going to sign a new left-sided defender. We can’t just go with Ritchie – he needs a deputy. If it isn’t going to be Aarons, the Magpies are going to have to scour the market and find someone.
As for Aarons, he’ll need to make a decision about his future. It seems like his days at Newcastle are numbered, with Bruce unwilling to give him another chance.
But who will we sign to provide backup for Ritchie? Will another deal come out of nowhere like Nabil Bentaleb?
