Steve Bruce has confirmed that Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey won’t make their Newcastle returns against Rochdale on Tuesday night.

The duo are part of the Magpies’ lengthy injury list, but are closing in on return. However, the FA Cup clash is ‘too early’ according to Bruce.

“Saint-Maximin has trained for the last two days but tomorrow might be a bit early. The same goes for Shelvey,” he said, as reported by the club’s official Twitter account.

Bruce also confirmed that Dwight Gayle and Paul Dummett are ruled out. The pair limped off against Wolves on Saturday, another day that saw Newcastle hampered by injuries. Seeing Gayle go off was the worst, as the striker had started the game brilliantly.

The FA Cup replay would’ve been a nice game to bring Saint-Maximin back into the fold. The Frenchman has been missing since the win against Southampton, but has been back in training.

While he won’t play against Rochdale, there might be an outside chance of him featuring against Chelsea on Saturday. ASM has been sorely missed, as has Shelvey in recent weeks.

Despite so many key players missing, hopefully we have enough to get past Rochdale tomorrow night. The winner takes on Oxford at home in the next round, which should give Newcastle all the incentive in the world.
