Steve Bruce admits he’s been playing Miguel Almiron in the wrong position

For the majority of the season, Miguel Almiron has been on the right wing.

And for the majority of the season, he’s struggled influence games as much as he can.

However, the Paraguayan was used in a different position against Burnley, and you could tell the difference straight away.

Almiron was used centrally, playing as an attacking midfielder just behind Dwight Gayle.

He was able to get on the ball more in dangerous positions, rather than running blindly into trouble as he tries desperately to get the ball on his favoured left foot.

Under Rafa Benitez, Almiron played on the left. And his best spell this season came when he was on the left.

But he can also be a threat through the middle. It’s just the right wing where he struggles, which begs the question why did Bruce persist with him out there?

After the game, Bruce admitted that maybe he hasn’t actually been using his number 24 in the right position.

“I think Almiron’s best position is off the front and he did OK as well,” he told the club’s official website.

Hopefully we don’t see the 26-year-old stuck on the right wing anymore this season. He’s completely wasted out there.

With his pace and dribbling ability, he needs to be running at the heart of defences. Fingers crossed he did enough against Burnley to convince Bruce that he should stay in the middle.
