Stan Collymore has now urged Newcastle United to sign Kieran Tierney if they want to become regulars in the Premier League’s top four.
Newcastle are looking good for a top-four spot this season, but whether they bag that coveted Champions League spot this season or not, the real marker of quality will be if we can be in and around that conversation every season from now on.
Stan Collymore‘s column for CaughtOffside is an interesting read when he gets to talking about Newcastle. He identifies three realistic signings which he believes would see Newcastle competing at the right end of the table again next season, and he’s actually spot on.
Collymore identified three players Newcastle should sign
The three players he chooses are: James Maddison who has been linked with Newcastle for a long time now. Moises Caicedo from Brighton who would be a brilliant coup by Newcastle for that defensive midfield role. However, the one that really stands out is Kieran Tierney from Arsenal.
It’s not a new idea, and Newcastle have been linked to Tierney for a while now, but it’s what Collymore says about the Scotland international that stands out.

The former Liverpool striker believes Tierney could go on to be one of the best left-back’s in the country at Newcastle, writing: “I think Kieran Tierney would be very good. He’s been unlucky with injuries at Arsenal but I like him a lot and I think he could do an Andy Robertson if he found the right club.
“Tierney could go on to be one of the best left-backs in the country.”
Tierney would be a risky signing for Newcastle but he could be phenomenal too
If Newcastle could keep him fit I’m inclined to agree with Collymore. I’ve long been an admirer of Tierney and I couldn’t believe it when Newcastle were linked with a £30million move for the ‘immense‘ left-back. Injuries aside, I think that’s a really good price for someone of his quality.
He’s a solid defensive option but also excellent on the overlap and can provide fantastic crosses for Alexander Isak to latch on to. With Dan Burn and Matt Targett both very capable options, we’d not be short of back-up if he does get injured. The issue will be if we fork out £30million and he ends up on the treatment table more than the pitch.
Tierney has made 22 Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season although mostly off the bench as Oleksandr Zinchenko has made the left-back spot his own under Mikel Arteta.
It’s a risky signing with his injury record in mind, especially with Alex Grimaldo available for free who is a very similar player, but I’d say his age and Premier League experience give Tierney the edge.
