Former Premier League striker Stan Collymore has branded Newcastle United pair Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley ‘the worst double act in Premier League history’.

The ex-goalscorer has penned a strongly-worded column in the Mirror about the current state of affairs at St. James’ Park.

In it, he accuses both individuals of not caring about the fate of the club, and describes the players as ‘totally directionless’ under Bruce’s management.

The assessment comes after Newcastle slipped to yet another defeat at the weekend, this time against Brighton.

The Seagulls ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at the Amex Stadium and were superior in every department.

Not mincing his words, Collymore writes: “Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley are the worst double act in Premier League history.

“He (Bruce) exudes misery… talking up average opposition, moaning about injuries, and talking in meaningless generalities.. while rival coaches give insightful detailed answers.

“With Ashley it feels personal. Like he wants to mess the club around because he feels personally wounded because of the stick he’s taken.

“It is awful, dreadful, and I genuinely feel for those fans.”

Spot on

It’s a hard-hitting piece, but bang on the money.

Bruce and especially Ashley simply do not care about the fate of the club at this point. Or at least, that is the way it comes across.

It is just unfathomable how Bruce has been backed given this horrific record he’s overseen since December 16 (20 games, two wins, 13 defeats, 14 goals scored, 35 conceded).

There’s just no doubt he would have gotten the axe weeks ago at another club.
