Southgate says £12m Newcastle man has been one of the PL’s best players this year

Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier has once again been called up to the England squad with boss Gareth Southgate making mention of his form this season in his press conference.

Newcastle duo Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson have earned themselves a place in Gareth Southgate‘s latest England squad while goalkeeper Nick Pope misses out through injury.

Trippier has had a blinder of a season for Newcastle and that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Southgate. The England boss mentioned the 32-year-old in his presser when asked about Liverpool‘s Trent Alexander-Arnold who earned a recall to the International set-up after rediscovering his club form.

Trippier is ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold in the England pecking order

Talking about the Liverpool star, Southgate said (via the Mirror): “The reason for the conversation was that I felt it was good to chat to him about what he is doing, about how I see it, how he sees it, what it might become.

“Contrary to what might be the mood music – I have a really good relationship with him and we talk a lot about his game, football.‌

“I’ve always recognised his qualities as a player but he’s just been bloody unlucky that we’ve got [Kyle] Walker, who has just had three of the best games I’ve seen from a right back, Trippier who has probably been one of the outstanding players this season, Reece James also.”

Trippier scooped Newcastle’s Player of the Year award

Trippier scooped Newcastle’s player of the year award for his efforts this season as the former Tottenham man high on the Premier League’s “big chances created” stats chart, alongside, ironically enough, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

To go alongside his creative play, Trippier is also a rock-solid part of what is now, the joint best defence in the league tied with champions Manchester City going into the final game of the season.

It’s not just on the pitch that Trippier has helped the Magpies as since he’s arrived at Newcastle for £12million in January 2022 he has oozed class and displayed true leadership qualities.

He absolutely deserves to still be in the England squad even at 32, there’s still a few good years left in Trippier for club and country yet.
