Newcastle defender Jamal Lewis was on the wrong end of a controversial decision last night as Northern Ireland lost to Switzerland.
Ian Barraclough’s team went down to 10-men after 37 minutes in Geneva. The Magpies left-back was dismissed for supposedly wasting time when trying to take a throw-in.
His first yellow came from a foul which in truth probably was poor defending. The second was borderline farcical though and changed the complexion of the game.
Switzerland would go on to claim a 2-0 win and the three points now has them six points clear at the top of their qualification group.
Lewis signed for Newcastle in 2020 from Norwich for £14 million. He has fallen down the pecking order this season, playing just six minutes of Premier League action.
Last season, the youngster made 26 appearances for the Magpies, registering one assist in Steve Bruce’s team.
Heading out to play for Northern Ireland might have offered a nice respite from his troubles at club level.
Instead, he managed just 37 minutes and will now miss Tuesday’s game with Bulgaria in Sofia.
Lewis looks like a decent prospect and he’ll hope a new manager at St James’ Park can help him win back a place in the team.
What have supporters said about Newcastle man Lewis’ sending off?
The Northern Ireland faithful are still incensed. A heavy night in Belfast city centre won’t have made them feel any better and this morning supporters are still reeling.
It does seem somewhat bizarre that Lewis wasn’t warned by the referee. Okay, laws are there to be adhered to, but with some referees, common sense really isn’t in their vocabulary.
The game was a massive one for Northern Ireland and ultimately the big decision by the referee has cost Barraclough’s team massively.
