This impressive statistic from Newcastle United’s 4-1 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday shows why Bruno Guimaraes was a shining light during a miserable afternoon.

There was not much to shout about from Newcastle’s side of things after a second defeat in four days that has really dented their Champions League hopes.

But the statistics from TheOther14’s X account show that Bruno never gave up on his team and, despite the scoreline, refused to lower his work rate throughout the 90 minutes.

Bruno’s desire and passion was one positive for Newcastle

Any Newcastle fan would struggle to come away from that game trying to pick out who had impressed, and you can’t really blame them. But there was something to give supporters a little bit of reassurance.

Star midfielder Bruno had completed the most tackles and interceptions this weekend than any other player from teams outside the tradition big six, and he was clear by some distance too.

The Brazilian made six tackles and seven interceptions in yesterday’s game giving him a total of 13 combined, five more than Burnley’s Josh Brownhill who came in second.

It may be a small victory, but it’s a victory nonetheless and something that Newcastle can come away from the game and at least take a little bit of pride in after what was otherwise a shocking performance.

Newcastle need more fight and hunger against AC Milan

Newcastle are typically brilliant at putting the opposition under a lot of pressure and forcing turnovers all over the pitch just like Bruno had been doing, but against Tottenham the team just struggled to string a few good passes together to break out of their half.

Tottenham were also able to play straight through the middle to find acres of space in front of Martin Dubravka’s box, capitalising on Newcastle’s errors time and time again.

Eddie Howe won’t want to dwell on the result too much, but will have made sure that the players understand that if they put in a similar performance against Milan on Wednesday then they can kiss any dreams of playing in the Champions League or even Europa League knockouts goodbye.
