Simon Jordan thinks Mason Mounts wage demands are a problem

Newcastle United are interested in taking advantage of Mason Mount’s contract stalemate at Chelsea but Simon Jordan believes the midfielder’s wage demands will be an issue for any interested club.

TalkSPORT’s Simon Jordan and Danny Murphy butted heads over the current Mason Mount situation as it was revealed that Bayern Munich had added their name to the list of clubs eyeing a move for the England playmaker. While Murphy was full of praise for Mount’s ability despite a tough season, Jordan was more focused on his wage demands.

Jordan said: “His problem currently at Chelsea as far as I understand it, with the contractual situation and a potential move away is that there are some pretty outlandish demands coming in for salary. I think they’re in the mid-£200,000 plus.

Jordan says Mount’s wage demands are ‘prohibiting a move’

“My understanding is that the lad wants to stay at Chelsea but he wants the kind of salary that’s prohibiting that conversation, it’s also prohibiting moving to other football clubs.”

If the figures being mentioned by Jordan have any truth to them that would certainly put Newcastle off from making a move. The current salary cap is likely going to be reviewed in the summer, especially with the club looking to tie down Bruno Guimaraes to a new, more lucrative contract. However, I don’t think they’re going to make the leap up to the quarter of a million pounds a week mark.

Of course, there’s always room for negotiation and there are many other factors involved in a footballer’s decision to join a club like guaranteed playing time and a bevvy of extras that could help to plug that gap in wages.

With Mount’s reputation, he’s not going to be short of offers. Harry Kane has even called him a ‘special‘ player. However, it’s whether any of the clubs interested in him would be willing to come anywhere near his wage demands. Chelsea are throwing money around like it’s going out of fashion and Mount has had to sit back and watch all these stars come in on wages that dwarf his own, after all he’s given that club over the years.

With such wage demands Newcastle are unlikely to move for Mount

Of course he’s going to want to feel appreciated and there’s no better way to do that in football than to up your wages to the same level as the big stars. However, not every club is as frivolous with money so if Mount is to move in the summer he may need to realise that those figures aren’t really the norm elsewhere.

I say this as Bukayo Saka is about to land a £300,000-a-week deal at Arsenal, but as I said, that’s not the norm, but there are always exceptions.

I think Newcastle are a couple of years away from being at the level where we can offer such outrageous contracts which puts a move for Mount very much in the ‘doubtful’ column this summer.
