Simon Jordan has shared what he thinks Newcastle United are going to do in the January transfer window amid their injury crisis.
Newcastle have often had over 10 first-team players out injured while Sandro Tonali will be suspended for the rest of season, meaning the club may look to buy reinforcements next month.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan predicted Newcastle not to spend a huge amount in January and only buy what has become a necessity due to unforeseen circumstances.
Jordan doesn’t think Newcastle are going to spend big
January is typically a difficult market to figure out. Players prices are normally inflated as clubs don’t want to lose their star men halfway through a season.
Newcastle’s situation is quite unique in that nobody could have predicted what was going to happen to Tonali and then the injury crisis on top of that has made things very difficult for Eddie Howe.
Despite these hurdles, the team are still on track to achieve their goals this season, but they may be relying on bringing in some fresh faces to help this stretched squad out.
A new goalkeeper feels practically essential with Nick Pope injured and Martin Dubravka now a doubt for tonight’s game, but other than that and a midfielder to replace Tonali, Jordan doesn’t see Newcastle doing much else in January.
On talkSPORT, Jordan said: “It depends who’s available. It [January] doesn’t tend to be a marketplace for big clubs to spend a lot of money and Newcastle fall into that category.
“There are exceptions, but most of the time the big clubs don’t do business in January. So I’d be surprised if they do huge business.
“Obviously they’ve lost Tonali so that might be a necessity, and they might take a goalkeeper on loan. But we’re talking about preserving a position rather than enhancing it.”
Newcastle shouldn’t have an injury problem for second-half of the season
Although it is a huge deal currently, the injuries that Newcastle have picked up do seem to be unique and freak incidents that shouldn’t cause any long-lasting problems for players.
Dan Burn, for example, suffered a back injury after falling from a height while Harvey Barnes injured his toe against Sheffield United but both are expected to be back in contention soon.
Other players like Pope, who has an injured shoulder, and Tonali won’t return for a while, but it should still be a huge improvement for Howe who will try to push on with Newcastle and recapture last season’s incredible form.
