‘Shocking’… John Terry now reacts after what he saw during Newcastle vs Liverpool game last night

John Terry has now revealed what he thought of Anthony Taylor’s decision to award Liverpool a late second penalty against Newcastle last night.

Newcastle had fought hard in a difficult game at Anfield but had nothing to show for their efforts after Mohammed Salah fired home a second spot-kick to wrap up the three points.

The decision to award the penalty, however, was very controversial as Jota had continued to run after the contact was made from Martin Dubravka before falling through the ground, and John Terry was not happy with the referee and VAR.

Terry left shocked at Liverpool’s second penalty

Liverpool had already been awarded one penalty in the first half which was in slightly similar circumstances as the player continued on before going to ground, though this was with much greater contact from Sven Botman.

This decision, however, is very difficult to understand as Dubravka had only made minor contact with the heel of Jota who had managed to take two full steps before throwing himself to the floor.

Nevertheless, VAR had confirmed Taylor’s verdict to give it as a foul and Salah was able to put the result out of Newcastle’s reach with a 4-2 lead in the final few minutes.

After the game, Terry was appalled by the refereeing standards on display in the game after giving the penalty, but was more shocked to see that VAR had agreed with the decision.

On social media, Terry said: “How on earth is that a penalty? Shocking dive ! The worst thing is VAR give it?”

Newcastle have to turn their fortunes around

While they will feel somewhat aggrieved or even robbed because of the controversial penalty decision, Newcastle were second best throughout the full 90 minutes last night and didn’t deserve to get anything from the game.

That’s not to excuse Anthony Taylor and VAR, but perhaps if Newcastle had been more solid defensively then they wouldn’t have been in that position in the first place.

Liverpool had been so dominant they were able to rack up the highest xG in a Premier League match to date, so there can be few complaints from Eddie Howe.

It’s just yet another poor result in a very difficult period for Newcastle who now simply have to win against Sunderland to restore a bit of confidence in the team.
