Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has dropped a bombshell by suggesting that the Magpies could cash in on their prize asset Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

Speaking on ESPN a viewer asked why Newcastle aren’t in the mix for Jude Bellingham which was answered by Shaka Hislop who said: “Newcastle aren’t going to spend that kind of money on players. The bulk of their budget is earmarked for developing the training ground.

“In all seriousness, I’d be surprised if they kept Guimaraes. I’d be surprised if a big bid doesn’t come in for him this summer. I’m just saying I’d be surprised if a big bid doesn’t come in and they aren’t tempted.

Shaka thinks Newcastle would be tempted to sell Bruno if a big bid came in

“They’re not spending all the money in the world on players.

“They don’t need to sell players but if a bid of £120million comes in I think they’d sell.”

Shaka’s comments caused quite a stir in the ESPN studio with the host Dan Thomas questioning his logic. Shaka concedes that Newcastle have plenty of money and therefore don’t need to sell, but then says that they’d sell Bruno so they could bring in more players. The whole thing ended up in a round of laughter in the studio, but I don’t think Newcastle fans will find it so funny.

Let’s be honest, Bruno is going nowhere

The thought of selling ‘magnificent‘ Bruno Guimaraes at this point sends shivers down Geordie spines. If the Newcastle hierarchy are serious about this project, which we know they are, there’s no way they’d sell their best player, regardless of any silly bids.

Granted a bid of £120million for a player we paid just £40million for is a fantastic bit of business from a financial sense, but from a footballing point of view it could set the project back. The squad almost revolves around Bruno right now, he’s the focal point of every move, he’s the one we need to build our team around.

Cashing in would make absolutely no sense. Thankfully, Shaka is not in charge of transfers at Newcastle and after these comments, he certainly won’t be sounded out by the club for a future role in that regard.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love Shaka, but this comment was a bit nuts to say the least.
